Red-winged Blackbird (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/11/2010

Number: 1

It has been been beautiful spring like weather for the last several days to two weeks. Daytime highs between 5 and 12 degrees celcius and night times just below freezing. I knew that the red-winged blackbirds should be here, but they have beem mystiously absent. There have been no robins around either. Just before 10 AM Eastern I was standing at my kitchen sink drinking coffee and peering out the window into my 2 acre back yard when a flock of about a dozen red-winged blackbirds swooped in to the feeders and then just as quickly darted away to the cattails in our backyard pond. To me the red-winged blackbirds are the true first sign of spring. Where are the robins?
