Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/13/2010

Number: 1

While visiting our summer home for the first time this year I spotted a large Monarch butterfly feeding. Our home is located on a barrier island off of the Lousiana coast and I wondered if this was first stop of her migration.I continued to watch her while I weeded my garden and hoped she would find the necessary nourishment and rest. The winds were gusty and she struggled to fly. The Island has a butterfly dome so it crossed my mind to relocate her to the safety of the dome but decided to let nature prevail. The next morning she was there again fluttering around with great ease due to the calm conditions. She even lit on a wildflower. When I left for home later that morning, I started to plan my annual planting of my center's butterfly garden so that the weary travelers would have a place to complete their journies when they pass trough Destrehan.
