Red-winged Blackbird (FIRST sighted)

Date: 01/01/2010

Number: 1

I have had a whole flock (maybe 2 or 3 dozen)of blackbirds spending the winter here! I had planted a lot of sunflowers last summer and left the dried flowers standing up, heads and all. I also scattered corn for the rabbits, to keep them from eating my fruit trees. The blackbirds never left. Years ago I had a lone brown-headed cowbird spend the winter here. I figured he'd been ill or injured and had missed the trip south. Everyday he hopped out of the brush near my dining room window to eat the seeds I scattered, then one day the big flocks of blackbirds returned, and he was gone. this year we had some overnight temps down to minus 25 in January and I don't know how they survived it, but apparently they are hardy enough.
