Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/03/2010

Number: 1

One monarch flying southeast over the Albemarle Sound.

I am familiar with the painted ladies…and the monarchs….this was definitely a monarch, it surprised me also! I was out for an photo adventure with my husband. We were at the base of the Mann’s Harbor Bridge having just come from the Elizabethan Garden in Manteo. The milkweed on my property, a good distance from this location, is ~an inch or so out of the ground. It’s possible that it was overwintered….because this area is so water surrounded, it is very rare to have a hard freeze. There was some snow, but it melted within hours. The monarch I saw was not noticeably tattered. It was alone.
