Clear Lake near Waseca, Minnesota


"After a long winter, open water has returned to Clear Lake.


Waseca Lakes Association President Duane Rathmann said there isn’t an exact definition for marking the official ice out date.


The more common ways it is measured is if 80 to 90 percent of the lake is open water, or if the body of water is navigable from one end to the other.


Using either system, Clear Lake’s 2010 ice out date was March 30.


This is slightly later than last year’s date of March 25, while being slightly earlier than the average from 1874 to 2009 at April 3.


The earliest recorded ice out date was in March 6 in 1987, while the latest was on April 27, 1951."
