Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/09/2010

Number: 1

Just went outside and took photos of my milkweeds sprouting up in my pots. We had a recent warm spell (last night a cold front arrived and it's only 54 degrees today) but the warm spat REALLY caused the milkweed to grow, almost overnight! Thought I'd send you the photos. This is the Common Milkweed (Asclepia syriaca).

Keep in mind I started them from seed last year. They overwintered well in the pots and now they've taken off with gusto!! I hope they flower this year, as the flowers smell so great and I can then have my own seeds to harvest and grow more!! You might say I'm promoting the "milkweed gospel!"

Just went outside and took photos of my common milkweed that I have in pots out in front of my apartment. As you can see, the ones on the right are soon ready to bloom! I'm STILL waiting for the Monarchs to get here and lay eggs. Have some ladybug larvae on the milkweeds now and they are eating the aphids that are on them but I DON'T want them to eat the monarch eggs and caterpillars so I watch every day for Monarch eggs so I can rescue them! I don't want to kill the ladybug lava, as they are doing a fantastic job of eating the aphids. If you look closely, you'll see them on the leaves, although the closest one to the camera turned out blurry. If you look to the left of the same photo, you'll see the little critter busy eating the aphids!
