Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/11/2010

Number: 1

On April 15 on DesertLeps@yahoogroups.com, Mark Walker, a well known lepidopterist who grew up next to the monarch overwintering site in Cambria, Calif., reported seeing a monarch in Dona Ana Co. NM on April 11. I emailed Mark about the specifics and he said: "The Monarch appeared fresh (I didn't net it) and was flying in a northwesterly direction near the road to Aguirre Springs Campground. It may have been worn but was flying strong." The Aguirre Springs Campground is near Las Cruces, NM and quite high in elevation (5,740 feet) http://www.explorenm.com/camping/AguirreSpring/ I asked Mark if the monarch he saw was within the campground at 5,740 feet or below the campground. He wrote back and said: "Just below - probably around 5000 ft."
