Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 04/17/2010

Number: 1

Welcome spring and welcome hummers! Our first sighting of was a pair - male and female ruby throats - these winged jewels - late afternoon, Sat. 4/18. We've had two weeks of unseasonably hot weather for WNC (mid 80s dF) so quite a few nectar resources available - Serviceberry, forsythia, ajuga, etc although no red colored flowers are up yet) So I put out the trusty hummer feeder with 1:3 sugar water solution and within a half hour, the darting had begun.

Thanks to Journey North for this excellent online forum for learning about hummers and engaging students of all ages in their curious physiological and natural history. - Ina Warren. Brevard, NC
