Barn Swallow (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/23/2010

Number: 1

I sighted the first lone barn swallow individual today (04/23/2010). It seems a week or two later than normal. I have a barn that is over 160 years old that has had a colony since as long as I can remember, 35+years. Two years ago the barn was dismantled and rebuilt. Now the barn swallows can only enter through several windows that I leave open for them. The swallows returned last summer, but it seemed fledgling mortality was high from crashes into windows that can't be opened or because they misjudged the windows that were opened. I found at least 5 or 6 dead individuals last year. I've been worried how this will affect the sustainability of the colony. Normally there are 5 to 10 active nests in the barn. I depend on them to keep the bugs down around the farm.---Jim
