Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 04/22/2010

Number: 1

We live in a remote area of the Pine Barrens. It is 10 degrees cooler here than near the coast or near cities. There is also very little blacktop (parking lots, etc.) to absorb the heat of the sun. The first hummingbirds usually arrive here around April 20. By June or July we have 6 feeders that hold one quart each that are dry by the time we return from work - 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the evening. Our nearest neighbors to the North are at least 2 miles away and to the South 1 1/4 miles. We are surrounded by pine and oak woods and cranberry bogs no longer in use. We plant flowers and vines that are attractive to hummingbirds as soon as the danger of frost is over, which could be as late as May 30 in this area.

We love sitting out back and watching the antics of our hummingbirds.
