Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 04/26/2010

Number: 1

At about 6:20 pm I was standing near my patio window at home and saw my first female rubythroat. She was flying over [and peering intently at] the ends of my fan trellis, the scrollwork in the arbors, and individual flowers in my back yard. I have no red flowers in bloom, she did not attempt to nectar at my Atamasco lilies or Coreopsis. My hypotheses include she was looking for spider webs for her nest OR for insects to feed herself and/or young. She paused to perch on the arbor twice before she flew away. A delightful aeronautical performance that lasted all of 30 seconds tops!
