This reports a vagrant sighting for people who monitor species distribution incidents and trends.
At 9:30 AM a hummer buzzed my feeder. Thinking it was the first male ruby-throat of the season, I looked up from my work. It WAS a male hummer, but a male rufous. Even though I am very familiar with this species from numerous birding trips in CA, I couldn't believe it at first. The bird returned to the feeder regularly throughout the day. I last spotted it at 7:30 PM. It has not returned since then, nor are there ruby-throats here yet.
Although it is sad that this individual fetched up on the Maine coast, I truly enjoyed watching its orange body darting through my garden.
