Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/04/2010

Number: 1

our family was treated to the arrival of a male rt at breakfast, outside the window at feeder, up since early april. all the many reports of sightings close by was building up the anticipation. last eve. from 5pm on we watched for an arrival... today thru out the am and afternoon male rt visited alot. then we observed a male and female feeding at the same time and just sitting there on the perches. microwaved a fresh nectar batch around 5pm. it was still warm when i poured it in the glass feeder. while hanging feeder a male rt came to feed. my hand was still around the feeder and i figured this little guy is just going to go ahead and feed. just then another male rt dive bombed between my chest and the feeder so close to my shirt, complete with wing noise and that "squeal" they make, what a rush! it was then that i realized what i enjoy the most of the hummers and that is sitting very close to the feeder while they dive bomb each other using my head to hide from an attack!
