Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/03/2010

Number: 1

Two days ago (May 3) at around 12:30PM, when I was looking for Meadow Fritillarys, a large faded orange butterfly flew over my head heading north up the bicycle path. It did not stop and it was gone before I could get a look at it. I thought that it was too large for an American Lady and flying too high and purposefully, but since I did really see it very well I decided not to report it.

However, having looked at the Journey North website today, I have noticed that Ron Stager reported a Monarch at Gravenhurst today, and in light of this development I have decided to forward my observation to you. It could not have been a Viceroy because they are still in the caterpillar stage on the willow plants. Also, it was in the area where I often see a Monarch for the first time.
