Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/06/2010

Number: 1

at first i thought i was seeing things but i got close enough to verify that three monarchs were in a pine tree by the welland recreational canal. they were too high up for me to see if they were male or female and what shape their wings are in. this strand of trees is beside an old swing bridge and is fairly well sheltered. i have never seen monarchs this early before, but i have only been moniterring for three years.
i then checked the milkweed in the immediate area and didn't find any eggs. because of the nice weather we had the last couple of weeks, the milkweed is about 5" high and very plentiful.

i will be checking daily now for eggs and hope to find some soon.

i am quite sure they were monarchs.
