Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/11/2010

Number: 1

Today was the first day there were a lot of varieties of butterflies in our yard. One of them was a Monarch!

This is the first I've seen and I have been watching. This butterfly was bright and new, not tattered and old. It was probably recently 'born.'

We have asclepias tuberosas in the yard, but due to the cold winter days they have struggled longer to fill up with leaves and to make blooms. Sometimes we've had new butterflies exiting their chrysalises in our protected kitchen yard near several pots of butterfly weeds as early as February (as in February 2008), but this year has been low.
