Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/11/2010

Number: 1

Finally! I saw the first Monarch today in my butterfly garden. It was nectaring on mexican milkweed. I didn't try and see if it was male or female, simply watched it from several feet away. It was new and not tattered. I live in the Dallas city limits, so get fewer Monarchs than those in the country, but was beginning to worry I would see none this Spring. I have had no caterpillars this year and had about 5-8 make chrysalises on the eaves last year. The milkweed is in full bloom with no a scratch on a single leaf. The milkweed buffet is out, no one has come to eat. Sadly, some hornet chased the Monarch away. Maybe it'll be back tomorrow....
