Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/08/2010

Number: 1

Observed the first male Ruby Throat of the season sitting on the feeder closest to the house. Feeders have been available throughout the yard since 04/17/2010, but no confirmed perching until 05/08/10. We've also been privy to one extended courtship dance (05/06/10) but we've yet to see a female hummer actually perch on any of the feeders. The fruit trees, and flowering bushes are in full swing, albeit somewhat earlier than most years, and the warmer weather we've experienced has hatched plenty of bugs. We usually observe more females eating bugs and more males at the syrup.
