Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/02/2010

Number: 1

I had a long telephone conversation with John Brownley at Point Pelee National Park. Sounds like this remarkable park is having a great year for birds AND butterflies. As many will know, this park is located on the juncture of two major bird flyways. As well, it is close to the southern most point of Canada, where many southern species such as tulip tree, cucumber tree and prickly pear cactus can be found.

I was told that the milkweed emerged from the sand at Pelee about 10 days earlier than normal.

The first monarch noted in the butterfly record book at the visitor centre was a monarch seen by Sarah Rupert on May 2nd. Another was reported on May 9th by Heather Van Braeckel (sp?).
