Today's the day! I looked around yesterday and saw nothing. Today, just after noon, 2 or 3 Monarchs were spotted. They drifted in from the south and headed straight for the lilac blooms to feed.
I have been to the Monarch Reserves in central Mexico 3 times, and on two of those occasions I led tour groups from Canada specifically for that purpose - so I generally know a Monarch when I see one. In 2002 I was lucky enough to chat with Lincoln Brower and some of his team members in Angangueo.
In this case (yesterday) - I got out the binoculars and was able to get within 20 feet of these butterflies - so I had a very good look at them. The wouldn't stop moving long enough for me to determine sex, but they were definitely the real thing.
I have noted that the monarchs have arrived here every year for several years now at around the same time as the lilacs come out in bloom, and this year was no exception.
