Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 05/20/2010

Number: 1

Still no sight of an adult monarch but I continue to find eggs and a few small cats in multiple locations. So far I've found 55 eggs and 3 cats.

On one plant I found the three cats on the same leaf and they were slightly different sizes. Also on the same leaf were two eggs. Sounds like several different moms, or the same mom on different days. With a hearty supply of milkweed in the area it's very unusual to find so many eggs and cats on the same plant, much less the same leaf! I found several plants with more than one egg, and for the first time I'm seeing many eggs laid on top of the leaf (of large Common milkweed plants) instead of the underside, although I'm finding those as well.

We've had a lot of rain and some really warm temps early in the spring and the milkweed I'm seeing all looks great. In some locations the plants are much taller than in other places but it all looks healthy.

So the monarch news continues to be good in my neck of the woods.
