We have had SO much wind, but in spite of the gusty conditions, the first Black Swallowtail was observed in my backyard. Most of the host plants are in the front yard, so I hurried through the house and watched the spectacle of the EGG LAYING. This year I have a nice stand of fennel, dill, parsley, and the perennial, rue. The Swallowtail flitted about, "tasting" each plant until it began laying eggs on each kind. I love to see the eggs, larvae, pupa, and then the emergence of the new butterfly. Tomorrow, I will go weed the garden at the zoo.
