Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/28/2010

Number: 1

This morning a grade 4 Cambridge school class studying Habitats and Communities visited the Blair Outdoor and Environmental Education Centre. We had already commented on the monarch's status as a species at risk, and that no monarchs had been sighted here to date - no sooner were the words out of my mouth, a monarch drifted past us in the field. We were unable to determine gender, but it's colour was bright and fresh and the data we were collecting at the time put our sighting at 10:06 a.m., ~25 degrees C, with a light easterly breeze. No milkweed is yet growing on the property at Blair. Other sightings include spring azure, common ringlet, red admiral, arctic skipper, and we expect Baltimore checkerspots any time now!!
