Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/28/2010

Number: 1

Milkweed is more plentiful in my area than at this time last year. It is in bloom now with some beginning to produce seedpods. I have been checking two fields carefully for the past week for eggs and larvae. Until today I had not found any chewed leaves, larvae or eggs. Today I found one plant with a caterpillar about 2nd instar and a few chewed leaves. Considering that I have seen very few adult monarchs this spring I feel encouraged that this egg has survived predation, hopefully we will see more butterflies in our area when this generation has reaches the adult phase. The cautionary tale is that the fields I am monitoring are zoned for development. Human intervention is going to be vital to assure the availability of milkweed.
