Leaf-Out (Any Species)

Date: 05/27/2010

Number: 1

We have had a remarkably warm spring. Most plants were up or leaving out 2 weeks earlier than usual. I planted peas a full two weeks earlier than ever before. Then, on May 13, we had a frost. The peas (about 6 inches high) survived. Most tree leaves appeared wilted, but recovered. But, oak trees, which leaf out much later so had smaller leaves, were hit badly, the leaves killed. About a week and a half after that, they started falling off the trees. It is odd to see small (1 to 2 inch) leaves (not including the petiole) all over the ground. I collected some and put them in clear glass jar to memorialize this rare event. Fortunately, the oaks do not "put all their leaves in one bud" and now the side buds are competing to be leaders and the oaks all have very small new leaves.
