I spotted my first Monarch this afternoon (May 31) on the grounds of the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg. It landed on the flowers of lilac, but did not stop for long. We have some good plantings of milkweed around a number of exhibits, and sometimes the caterpillars are very noticeable. I should be out in the field collecting beetles and other insects almost every weekend, so I will let you know if I see others. I sent Dr. Bitzer sightings of almost two-dozen Red Admirals this week in Winnipeg.
