Robin (OTHER Observations)

Date: 06/13/2010

Number: 1

We had a robin's nest in our tree over the street. We came home Sunday (06/13/2010) and all 4 had fallen or been thrown from the nest by a predator, they were in the middle of the street, 2 had been hit by cars, 2 were still alive. We guessed from photos they were about 9 days old. Both parents were trying desperately to protect them. We moved them from the road immediately, then got some straw and cardboard and placed them ontop of it in the yard, close to where they were so the parents could find them. Little by little we moved them underneath the tree (the nest was unreachable for us to attempt to put them back, about 20 ft high). I bought a flower hanging basket (petunas) and once we saw the parents were taking care of the birds we placed them in the basket with some straw and hung it in tree. Today,Friday, 5 days after finding them I watched the babies hop out of the nest. The last I saw them they were in my back yard, with the parents still close by. I had always heard not to touch birds and other wild babies as the parents will abandon them. This clearly did not happen. We were thrilled and happy to have been able to help them and really enjoyed the week watching the parents take care of them and seeing the babies grow. It's been a wonderful experience!
