Oriole (1st Baltimore)

Date: 06/17/2010

Number: 1

While leaving the Hastings-on-Hudson library I headed to my car in the "upper" parking lot overlooking the Hudson River. I was suddenly aware of a bird swooping me. A Southern California native who has lived in New York only a few years, I had never seen this beautiful orange and black bird. I stopped to watch. The bird swooped me again, flitted around in the bushes, swooped over to a tree near me several times, and then flew up to the top of a tree behind me. The bird was chirping the whole time. I then saw why I was being swooped. Clinging to the trunk of the tree in front of me was a baby bird. I sat down at a nearby bench and waited for the orange and black bird to return, but it didn't. When I got home I immediately Googled "orange and black bird" and discovered I had seen my first Baltimore Oriole. I was pretty excited! My favorite, the Cardinal, now has some stiff competition.
