Hello from St. Martins. This afternoon, I noticed a big butterfly, flying around my garden in what appeared to be, sort of a drunken fashion. It made me do a double take, then grab my camera. Once it found my new patch of milkweed, it landed long enough for me to get a shot. Sure enough, it's a Monarch.
In looking at my records, last year was a terrible year for Monarchs, and I didn't see one til July 28. The year before, 2008, was a great year for them, and I saw the first one on July 3rd. Hopefully an early return means a good "crop" this year.
