Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 07/08/2010

Number: 1

While weeding in the Children's Learning Garden at the Virginia Living Museum this morning I found my first monarch larvae and possibly one egg. There was a 1st instar and 4th instar larva on separate common milkweed plants. Hurray! There was evidence of more caterpillars [small distinctive holes on common milkweed leaves] but they had dried edges and no caterpillars were found on those plants. They are either the victims of the heat, predators or jsut very good at hiding.
