Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 07/11/2010

Number: 1

My last report was June 28. Today's report is much more hopeful. In the last three days I have seen more Monarchs than during any other July. On our back hill, I spotted two mating pairs, one on July 09 and the other on July 10. On Saturday (July 10) I saw several butterflies feeding on milkweed flowers and at least one laying eggs, mostly on low lying plants amongst tall grass. I'm guessing that I saw eight butterflies and hoping there were many more. The milkweed plants are in excellent shape, with a variety of sizes and stages in my various patches. If we get good egg laying from our females, we could have good numbers of Monarchs by late August, just in time for migration. So many things can go wrong, but right now I'm very hopeful.
