Robin (OTHER Observations)

Date: 07/07/2010

Number: 1

I am not sure when(perhaps a month ago?)A mother robin came to inspect my deck and my artifical hanging plants. She made 3 trips, upon the 3rd.trip she had reached a decision. The male robin then appeared with a beak full of twigs, they proceded to build their nest in the artifical floral arrangement that was hanging on the wall of my deck.I was amazed by this.I was futher amazed as each time I went out on my deck, the father would fly away but the mother always stayed-even when I whistled or spoke softly to her. She laid 3 beautiful eggs and they all hatched. One day the arrangement fell off the wall.I went out to invesigate, the nest with 1 baby was still intact, but the other 2 babies were on the deck! Meanwhile the parents wre very upset,to say the least! I put a very soft pair of socks on my hands and returned the arrangement to the hook on the wall and proceeded very carefully to pick up the baby robins and return them to the nest. After all the commotion both parents flew away. I wondered if they would return, which they did after some time had passed. The male cont'd to be skittish but I believe the female was quite used to me by now and usually remained in the nest whenever I went out on the deck.2 days ago there was quite a racket going on,as I was trying to sleep I didn't get up to investigate.Later I found the whole family was gone. They are now on the roof-top of the building,I know because I can hear them chirping.I loved having them and believe it or not,I miss them! I wanted to share this story because I thought this was out of the "norm" for them. Am I right?
