Today, saw first (moderately worn female, about 3.0 shape) monarch this year at home, Roseland, VA 1400 feet elevation, flying near milkweeds, around our pond. Home garden milkweeds in excellent shape, Side garden by house with Asclepias incarnata, Asclepiastuberosa, and one surviving Asclepias curassavica from which I have made cuttings. Pond in good shape, Asclepias incarnate a bit sickly along edge of pond that I planted last year. Asclepias syriaca, tuberos and pururascens look good. We have pansies, Penstemon and several perennials blooming in garden.

Next (2nd) monarch seen: CRM pond around 2PM. One fresh monarch on nectaring on mint. Sex not recorded.

We have still seen only two monarchs here. The garden flowers are booming, so they really are scarce this summer.
