Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 07/27/2010

Number: 1

Conditions continue to be favorable and hopeful here for a good migration generation. We have milkweed in many stages, probably 75% have already flowered, but there should be enough late ones for August and September butterflies. There is still some egg laying going on, but I suspect it is slowing down. Lots of eggs right now just hatching and quite a few first instar caterpillars. My observations in the back pasture are frustrating because many of the eggs were laid on small milkweed plants mostly hidden under tall grass. The older plants don't show much in the way of either eggs or larvae so hopefully the hidden plants are loaded. Very interested in hearing other people's comments about this year's numbers, especially in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
