A least a half-dozen monarchs were constantly in sight flitting across our hay field while we worked outside yesterday and today (August 9th). The field is full of blooming clover, and milkweed is scattered about. We noted a chase at one point, and saw one mated pair in nuptial flight, clear evidence that monarchs are still breeding here in Vermont at latitude 44 N even thought it's almost the middle of August. We didn't inspect carefully, but did observe at least one milkweed plant with a monarch egg.
