Acc. to Monarch Watch, the # of returning spring monarchs "will be lower than at any time since the [Mexican] colonies became known..in 1975." So I've kept detailed local records. From a 1st adult sighting on May 25, I've tallied 31 adult monarchs (a big # for pre-migration weeks)- with egg and larvae counts matching peak years from 1992 until now. On 8/14, 8 monarchs visited our garden; today at least 5 more. But I haven't noticed the kinds of directional flight that typlifY migrants.
