Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/18/2010

Number: 1

Until this afternoon (8/18) I had not seen a Monarch since August 5th.
As I left the house this afternoon there was a recently eclosed Monarch
flying near the front deck. I expect that there are others nearly ready, because at the beginning of the month I noted 8 large 5th instars on Common Milkweed near the house - one pupated under the deck railing.
Prior to August 5th, I was seeing Monarchs most days.

I seldom see evidence of migrating Monarchs here. They enclose and leave quietly! I do not see other Monarchs heading south across my land and this is probably due to the land to the north being heavily wooded.

Each day for the past week I have been driving across the north side of Winnipeg in an east-west direction. I have not seen Monarchs crossing the highway.
Despite the good numbers of Monarchs this year, I have seen no report of clustering in the Winnipeg area.

At my MLMP "memorial" site, I found freshly laid eggs on August 5th,
and possibly others on August 12th, I will get back there later to confirm that (I may have missed them on the 5th)
Schools here restart after Labour Day, when I expect to hear more reports of teachers having large instars and pupae available.
