Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/19/2010

Number: 1

I haven't been home long but it looks like we are having a mid-August emergence of monarchs here (somewhat unusual) which will also lead to late season production. The local monarchs seem to be using Chynanchum lavae rather than new growth common milkweed. The Chynanchum is in full bloom and, where abundant, attracts a great number of insects. I have seen no evidence (an abundance of larvae) that premigration monarchs moving through this area in late July and early august - if there were any - produced any significant number of offspring.

Overall - the numbers of monarchs here (eastern KS) are at normal to slightly below normal levels.
