Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/19/2010

Number: 1

Have had a resident population this summer of at least 4 Ruby Throated HBs. It consists of two males (one mature male and one juvenile male) and at least one or two females. I know there are at least four individuals, as they interact at the feeders; but during those skirmishes, it's impossible for me to identify males or females. The juvenile male has an incomplete red gorget and one white feather on the top of his head; he is also slightly smaller than the other male.

I see them feeding multiple times during the course of each day, from dawn 'til late dusk. I had to recently separate my two feeders, as the mature male was driving off all comers. Now there is a feeder in the front and in the rear of the house, right outside the windows. The female(s) seem to prefer the new location, and the mature male is still guarding the feeder behind the house.
