Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/24/2008

Number: 1

The peak migration for the Monarchs passing through Lincoln, Nebraska was on Sept 24th, 2008. It was an incredible day!

I spent most of the day outside after a morning of pea soup fog lifted. I cleaned and filled the birdbath like I usually do by about 10am. By 11am I had cleaned and refilled our 9 feeders. We still have 2 females that have kept their bickering to a minimum and I have enjoyed watching them until about noon while having a couple cups of coffee on the patio. The temp reached near 80, with just a slight breeze. I decided to take some more pics of the few butterflies we have left...until I started seeing a sea of Monarchs heading south...I counted 131 that went over our house from 2pm til about 6:30pm! That doesn't include the times I went inside the house for this, that and the other. DH had to go to Omaha to work today for another training class for Oracle related to his job here at the electric co. He said he saw dozens cross RT 80 when he was coming home in the afternoon. I knew the Monarchs migrated, I just never witnessed it before. This is my 1st year to actually pay attention to a wonderful experience such as this...I was in awe by it all!
