timing is everything we have been out a couple of times in the last two weeks watching monarchs on the 300ac farm in wantage nj. the fresh cut meadows just off the wallkill river offered great viewing. these meadows were high grass with lots of milkweed in them. on the day of cutting i went through it and collected only 7 catapillers saw no gggs on the milkweed and counted 80 monarch flying over the meadows. i located some larger patches of milkweed and joe pye weed and declared them waystations.then asking the farmer if he could not cut these areas?? i explaned to him that the areas would be good monarch habitat, he was happy to help out.2 weeks later 8/17/10 i took ashly and her mom for a walk to check a 2 acre meadow for monarchs.we saw 3or4 at first as we watched for 5 min we realized that the monarch were laying eggs on the new crop of milkweed we did a study on 30 2to8 in high wilkweed plants counted 2to3egg per. counted a total of 46female monarch all laying eggs 200 milkweed and 5 1st instar cats. that after noon i checked the back 10 acre meadow counting 50 female all laying eggs.on 8/18 the observations are the same 8/20 very littel activity and few monaechs
