Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/21/2010

Number: 1

Hummingbirds have been around my garden for most of the summer...at least since July. Right now they feed from the Bee Balm that I have for adult Monarch Butterflies. Earlier in the year they enjoyed my delphiniums. Today, a hummingbird got into my plastic-covered greenhouse that I use as a shelter to protect monarch caterpillars from predators. The "door" (flap) of the shelter is usually open and the hummingbird must have been attracted to some bee balm that was inside in a vase, which I had put there for a hatching monarch butterfly to grip when it hatched a few days ago. The hummingbird was trying to get out through the clear plastic top. I put my hand in and ever-so-gently caught it and pulled my hand out of the shelter. It did not struggle and when I opened my hand it rested there for a few seconds, then flew away and landed on a utility wire in the back yard. It rested there for about a minute then flew away. Wow! I am feeling rather blessed today...two monarchs hatched, other crysalids turned clear (so are ready to hatch) and I held a hummingbird in my hand.
