Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 08/21/2010

Number: 1000

Report from the Monarch Butterfly Research Project on Stonington Peninsula in Rapid River, Michigan.

August 26
Over 1000 monarchs at this mornings roost count. Large groups of monarchs have been gathering for the past few days. We've had a strong northwest wind with warm temperatures during the day (high 72) and cooler at night (low 55). Many of the monarchs were already heading south as they warmed up and left the roost. I was watching between 7:00 am to 9:00 am. My observation time: I was watching for 2 hours.

August 22
We started migration monitoring on Aug. 8th with very low counts. I'm happy to report a large group of monarchs in the area the past two days. Strong north winds seem to have moved the monarchs down the Peninsula. I'm sure there were more in the area. Strong north wind. With the counts being low so far, it was great to see a larger number of monarchs. Yesterdays (8/21)roost and census counts were over 200 monarchs. We also tagged around 30.
