Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 08/23/2010

Number: 1

Many Monarch butterflies moving south. Estimate 60 per hour. They congregate on cedar and ash trees as they fly by. They appear to be resting and then moving on. Those resting in trees flash their wing colours whenever a new one approaches within 5 feet.

August 24
Significant number of Monarch butterflies moving south. But not as many as yesterday. Estimate 35 per hour.

Many more than last year. But not as many as a record year.

Editor's Note: This observer did not specify the number of monarchs present. We entered 'one' in the number field only to mark this record for future consideration.
