Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 08/21/2010

Number: 100

We discovered a number of clusters of butterflies, numbering from 12-50 roosting in the trees along cottage driveways near Tobermory. Tobermory is at the tip of the Bruce Penninsula surrounded by the waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. The clusters were anywhere from head height to about 30 feet up in white cedar, black spruce, balsam fir and white birch trees. We visited the roost at about 8 pm - it was 20 degrees C, 95% RH (it had rained earlier) with winds from the WSW. Other cottagers had reported seeing the roosting monarchs a day or two prior. A north wind was forecast for the next day to help them make their way down the Lake Huron shoreline.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum of 100 monarchs based on observer’s comments of “a number of clusters of butterflies, numbering from 12-50 .”
