Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 08/25/2010

Number: 100

August 30
I noticed that the roosting has been on the northeastern side of the trees. The predominant wind here is west southwest.
And being on the east side of the tree, they catch the morning first light of the warming sun. This weekend, I haven't seen roosting at all, however the monarchs are still on the wing. Over the weekend, I would guess I saw about 35-50 different Monarchs. The available flowers in this area is; Sunflower, Asters, Goldenrod of a few different variety, and some late blooming White Sweet Clover. I have also seen Monarch tapping the wells of Sapsucker drillings, and Butternut squash blossoms'.

August 28
The skies are filled with Monarchs flying through. Each night I can find them roosting in one of the many trees in my yard. Temps are in the upper to lower 80's, clear skies, and light winds. My observation time: I was watching for 1 hour.

August 25
Two medium sized groups forming high up on an Elm tree. Temps in the upper 60's light wind from the south. Its 7:30pm, so this was their roost for the night.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating 100 monarchs based on observer’s comment about “Two medium sized groups .”
