Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/27/2010

Number: 1

We are just getting into our fall season of Ruby-throated Humming Birds. From now until about September 15th, the numbers will grow and grow. I was out in the back yard yesterday photographing some Skippers on the zinnas and was constantly bombarded by hummers. Altus watched after I came in and counted eight in the backyard at one time, only one male. We have a backyard full of almost every flower a hummer or butterfly would be thrilled by that stands up to the TX heat. This morning we were out in yard with the RTHummers and for the first time saw a male Rufous. It is hot and dry, as of now Houston is saying this August will be the hottest month ever on record ... going back into the 1800's and we haven't had any rain here along the midcoast for the month. The heat and no rain is ruining what was a great nectar crop out in the wild for hummers and monarchs.
