Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 08/26/2010

Number: 500

September 17
Believe they've left the roost! A cold front from the north has moved in. We saw some late this afternoon circling around one another and rising above the tree tops where the wind caught them and they headed south!

September 15
Numbers are dropping, they're almost gone from the "roost". There were just 5 individuals accounted for at dusk.

September 14
This night held only a dozen individuals in the grove here.

September 13
The roosting has dropped to a trickle this night. Less than a dozen still here.

September 11
Numbers have dropped since yesterday. Still good numbers but down to 200 or less tonight.

September 10
There were nearly uncountable numbers in the grove and the pasture today! Fun! I'd have to "estimate" over 500 Monarchs...but impossible to be accurate.

September 9
Could only count 105 Monarchs roosting in the grove tonight.

Waking up in the morning

September 8
Between 300-400 Monarchs roosting in the grove this morning and tonight.

September 7
Have at least 150 Monarchs and perhaps another 50 interspersed about the grove tonight...we had a cold front and high winds last night and today so suspect more have moved on. Tried taking pictures in the low light.

September 4
Well over 300 Monarchs roosting together and in clusters in our grove and yard tonight.

September 2
Have more Monarchs roosting this evening. Not huge numbers but around 3 dozen. One elm had 27 individuals on three small branches. Cold front and high winds today.

September 1
We are still seeing roosting activity here in our grove. The numbers are low (less than a couple dozen) but they are still roosting in the tree branches in the evening. We still have Monarch caterpillars in the native pasture here also.

August 26
Had just over a couple dozen Monarchs roosting in the grove's trees the morning of the 26th. That evening I only observed 6 individuals together on branches.
