Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/27/2010

Number: 1

Greetings from Virginia's lovely Eastern Shore! I'm located about 25 mile south of Assateague Island (as the crow flies) near the coast. There has been lots of monarch activity here in our yard over the past 4 weeks! I have common, swamp, tropical milkweed, and butterfly weed, along with many nectar sources in my waystation. There has been so much egg laying, it's been hard to keep up. I'm attempting to rescue as many caterpillars and eggs as possible. There are always monarchs around, nectaring and egg laying seemingly every minute! I have 4 "butterfly nets" on my side porch and now have 38 chrysalises waiting to hatch. I have released 15 butterflies so far, and released 3 more today...and there are about 30 more caterpillars in various stages chomping away on my deck in several containers! Lots of activity! It's hard to keep up, but I'm trying! Here we go!
