Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/28/2010

Number: 1

Numbers of Hummers are increasing. Had ten RT (all females), two Rufous (a female and an immature male), and a Buff-bellied all at one time just after noon. This is the first time we've actually seen a Buff-bellied long enough and enough times to be able to identify one. It appeared yesterday as a larger and darker Hummer with darker rufous and has been around for two days now, esp likes the Turk's Caps. The five huge Turk's Caps shrubs with thousands of flowers plus pentas, curassavica, and zinnas keep the Hummers from crowding up at the feeders ... almost! The second and third weeks of September, this number may be five to ten times as many, as the Hummers "tank up" before jumping off to cross the Gulf for the Yucatan. Plus we've had monarchs 3 out of 4 days during August this year which is unusual and now some butterflies are coming up from the Rio Grande Valley and Mexico ...
